Mizoram to set up sugar mill at Lungleng village

Aizawl: Lungleng village under Tlangnuam RD Block in Aizawl District is likely to get a mill that will be used for making brown sugar, after successul sugarcane cultivation under the state government’s flagship programme — the NLUP.

“The Agriculture Department is planning to set up the mill,” Agriculture Director Dr.C.Lalzarliana said yesterday while visiting Lungleng village.
The official along with other staff inspected the different sugarcane fields at Lungeng village that are under the NLUP.

Since long, Lungleng village has been known for sugarcane cultivation and it is the main supplier of juggery/molasses for Aizawl city.

In Lungleng North, where 158 families live, at least 80-90 families are cultivating sugarcane. Under NLUP, about 65 families are said to achieve success in sugarcane cultivation.
Likewise, in Lungleng-I, 60 out of 164 families are cultivating sugarcane, and under NLUP, 44 families are said to achieve success in sugarcane cultivation.

Among the cultivators who met with huge success, many of them now have a huge production of 63qtls. of juggery annually.

Duhawma (VCP), Lalthanpuia and Para are some of the beneficiaries from Lungleng-I who achieve success. From Lungleng North, Lalchhuana (VCP), Lalzawmliana, Hmingthanga, R.Kapthanga and Remi are the prominent ones.

5th e-North East Summit held in Aizawl; Mizoram gets Emerging IT State of the Year

Aizawl: The 5th e-North East Summit was held yesterday in Aizawl. The event was jointly organised by Information Communication Technology (ICT), Department of Mizoram Government, and the North East Development Foundation (NEDF). 

 

The one-day programme was held Aijal Club in which C. Lalhmachhuana, ITS, Secretary ICT Department, delivered welcome address while Dr. Syed S. Kazi, Lead Partner, NEDF delivered key-note address.

The success stories of 51 IT projects by the state governments, organizations, business entities of NE were highlighted and discussed. The Workshop I was guided by C. Lalhmachhuana, Secretary, ICT Department and was moderated by Amitabh Singhal, Board Director, PIR, while Sanjeev Sharma, Jt. Secretary, NETIA and Prof. Basav Roychoudhury, IIM Shillong were Juror Invitees. The Workshop I theme was ‘Digital Innovations For Citizen Services Delivery in North East India’. 21 new IT developments for enhancement for service to the people and for improvement of government administration were shown and discussed during the Workshop.

Workshop II with the theme ‘Digital Innovation in Education, Learning & Healthcare’ was held under the guidance of R. Lalvena, Secretary, School Education Department and was moderated by Shri Rajen Varada, CEO, Open Knowledge Community (OKC), while Debabrata Bhadury, Chief Coordinator, East & North East, NIELIT and Biswajit Hazarika, Chairman, IT, FINER were Juror Invitees. 11 new IT new developments for improvement of education and health were discussed.

Workshop III with its theme ‘Digital Innovations in Livelihood & Enterprise, Commerce & Business, Culture & Heritage, Environment & Tourism, Inclusion, News and Media’ was held under the leadership of Madan Mohan Rao, Board Advisor, DEF, while Mrs. Smita Sahay, Partner, NEDF was Expert Invitee and Mrs. Gayatri Buragohian, Director, FST was Juror Invitee. 17 new IT developments for the subjects mentioned in the theme were demonstrated and discussed in the Workshop.

The 51 IT devices demonstrated during the workshops were all tested, and then divided into different categories. The best in each category were awarded in the programme of ‘5th e-North East Award 2014’ held afternoon at Legislative Assembly, Conference Hall. Mizoram ICT Minister Lal Thanzara, the Chief Guest of the programme, handed over the awards.

AWARDS FOR MIZORAM

There were 8 Nominations from Mizoram, of which the joint project of Regional Transport Office, Mizoram and NIC Mizoram State Unit – ‘Real Time Courtesy & Information SMS Without Using SMS Gateway received the Award in Services Delivery category.

Computerization of Taxes project under Taxation Department; East Lungdar RD Block website; and Mizoweb Livelihood Centre were also awarded under Special Mention category.

Mizoram received the Emerging IT State of the Year Award and also Special Recognition of the Year Award for the Facebook group Special Report.

There were 97 nominations for the Award from which were selected 33 finalists; each of the best project in 8 different categories received the 5th e-North East Award 2014.

Lal Thanzara expressed gratitude to the organisers and remarked that the 5th e-North East Summit 2014 held in Aizawl is a big move for IT and related sectors in Mizoram. He expressed hope the Summit would bring forth a good result in the world of IT and related sectors. He said that Mizoram Government gives importance to IT, adding, the state government is trying to create as many conveniences to the people through the use of IT.

He mentioned that various Mission Mode Project under National e-Governance project like – State Wide Area Network (SWAN), State Data Centre (SDC) ; Common Service Centre (CSC); e-District pilot project in Aizawl; VAT collection system and VAHAN and Sarathi are successfully carried out by the state government.

State Delivery Gateway (SSDG) and State Portal (SP) are also expected to be completed during the present year, ICT Minister mentioned. Mizoram government will do its best for the success of the new central government flagship programme Digital India, the minister said.

 

Further, he added that the state government acknowledged the importance of ‘digital connectivity’ for IT and related fields, and accordingly State Level Committee on Telecommunications has been set up to supervise, vigilate and review the works of the Central government projects in Mizoram like Intra-SDHQ-DGQ OFC project, National Optic Fibre Network (NOFN) and other connectivity projects.

Lal Thanzara also mentioned that Mizoram government and Ministry of DoNER in recently  collaborated with National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM), for setting up of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Business Process Management (BPM) in Mizoram. If successful, the same is expected to open up good avenues of economic sources for the youth in the state, the minister said.

The e-North East Summit had been hosted earlier by Assam, Nagaland, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.

Central YMA to keep Aizawl free from drug addicts and prostitutes

Aizawl: In a bid to keep Aizawl city clean from Drug addicts and Prostitutes, largest NGO in the state, Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA) has carried out a massive drive of cleaning up people with immoral behaviour such as drug addicts and prostitutes living in Aizawl city and so far 143 have been caught, CYMA report said. 

CYMA SRS has carried out the clean-up drive since 11 April, 2015 (5:30 a.m.). As of 20 April, 2015 today, 104 No.4 (drugs) addicts, 7 prostitutes (KS) and 31 immoral persons because of intoxicants and others, in total 143, have been nabbed.

These 143 people include 86 men and 57 women and 3 gay prostitutes, CYMA report mentioned. Except 8 of them who were taken to Homes- 6 to New Life Home Society Jeriko, Durtlang and 2 to Protective Home Hunthar Veng, Aizawl, all were taken back to their respective family after informing YMA branch leaders of their locality. 

 

Those taken to New Life Home Society Jeriko, Durtlang and Protective Home Hunthar Veng, Aizawl are given Counselling by the Counsellors from IKO. CYMA acknowledged Presbyterian Kohhran Dawrpui Hmeichhia Committee and College Veng Branch YMA who have donated Rs. 5,000.00 and Rs. 2,000.00 respectively towards the SRS initiative.  

RTI awareness increasing in Mizoram:State Information Chief

Aizawl, Oct 11: An increasing number of people in Mizoram have started using the Right to Information (RTI) Act since its enactment in October 2005. This is evident from the increase in RTI queries over the last five years.

"RTI applications increased from 476 in 2006-2007 to 1045 in 2011-2012, which was positive sign," Mizoram state information commissioner Lal M Dingliana said while inaugurating RTI week at Kolasib on Monday.

Since the RTI Act was implemented in Mizoram, we have witnessed significant progress in different fields. It has enabled the people to understand more about the government's functioning and the various schemes made for them, he said. It has shortened the wide gap between the people and the government.

Speaking at the function ,Kolasib DC Niharika Rai also said that the RTI was one of the most important rights enjoyed by the citizens of India.She advised the SPIOSs to provide answers to RTI queries without delay and emphasised that the RTI Act should give us sincerity and honesty in our works.

According to sources, different departments of the state government have received 3505 RTI queries since April 2006 till September 2012. Of these , 67 RTI applicants made appeals to the Mizoram state

information commission against non- furnishing of documents of the concerned departments.

There were 371 RTI applicants during 2007-08, which decrease to 177 in 2008-09. The RTI applications increased to 695 in 2009-10 and further to 1045 during 2011-2012. The RTI week will be observed across the state during this week.

Aizawl,Oct 3: In Mizoram the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi is observed every year as the first day of cleanliness week. In Aizawl, the main function was held in Aizawl Municipal Council Office in Thuampui on Tuesday morning. Addressing the gathering, Aizawl Municipal Council Chairman, Mr. CT Zakhuma asked the people to continue cleanliness drive throughout the year. He also said, disposal of garbage and refuge materials by the Local Councils in Public Private Partnership Mode has proved successful. The Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Nghaklianmawia also addressed the function and distributed 1 thousand rupees each to the Local Councils for launching cleanliness campaign in their respective localities. He also said, clean Govt. High Schools, localities and Hotels will be selected during observation of the week which will be ending on next Tuesday.

The function was presided over by the Executive Councilor, Mr. Lalzirliana. Penticostal Youth Dept.of UPC North East India also observed the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi as Social Work Day. Members from difference localities started picking refused and waste materials from Sikulpuikawn, KhatlaKawn, Vaivakawn, Bawngkawn, Chanmari and Bethlehem and they met together at Millenium Center where the closing function was held. Aizawl, Oct 3: Chief Minister, Mr. LalThanhawlawill attend a Seminar on 'Good Governance' to be organised by Ethics Committee in Saikuti Hall on Wednesday.

In the first session, the Ethics Committee Chairman, Rev. C. Rosiama will present his papers on good governance. After the presentation there will be a short discussion on his paper. In the second session,

Rev. C Lalsangliana will present his papers on good governance which will be followed by discussion. Besides religious and NGO leaders, Govt. servants from the rank of UDC are going to attend the Seminar.

Truck crushes family of three on NH 54

Aizawl, Oct 1: A family of three-a husband, wife and their only son-died tragically in a road accident as they were travelling on a scooter on their way to their farm. The three were crushed to death by a truck fully loaded with bricks around 8:30 am between Kawnpui town and Bualpui on NH 54.

As the truck was found on the wrong side of the road it was presumed to be the fault of the driver. The truck drivers with his handyman fled from the scene along with all the vehicle’s documents and were nowhere to be seen at the site of the accident. The residents of the town have boiled in anger over the tragic incident.  The people of kawnpui this morning blocked the national highway for a few hours this morning; however they dispersed within a few hours. The police are trying their best to establish the identity of the owner of the truck which has Mizoram registration plates and that of the driver.

Aizawl, Sept 28:The volunteers of the local council and a local vigilante group enforced the order of Mission Veng local council’s and prohibited the parking of taxis in the taxi rank starting from 5 am on Thursday. This action made the Sikulpuikawn taxi stand devoid of taxis and passengers had to board the taxi outside the stand causing traffic congestion.

The cabbies have been accused of indulging in immoral behaviour in public like selling liquor,playing cards and occasionally engaged in drunken brawl.

“The taxi drivers did not pay heed to the local authorities’ repeated warnings, forcing us to issue the ban’’, said Francis Lalrammuana, secretary of Mission  Veng Council. The taxi drivers also allegedly charged higher fares compared to other taxi ranks and also often refused to take passengers to some destinations if those destinations were not favourable to the cabbies. The cabbies were also accused of parking beyond the stand limited by city traffic authorities.
